Software interacting with software

Key points

  • Many information systems can interact directly with other software. This means that different information systems can exchange data without a user requesting it.
  • When a web page is put up online, it may be visited by a web crawler, which is a program that navigates around the web by following hyperlinks. The crawler is indexing the contents of web pages to a database that will be used by search engines to provide search results.
  • A bot is a program that can automate a task online. Boys are used to control chatrooms, or visit websites to gather prices for price comparison websites.
