Read-only storage has been pre-written and can only be read. A CD-ROM or DVD-ROM is read only. Read-only storage is also used on ROM chips contained on the computer's motherboard. This chip has pre-written code that allows the computer to start up and load the Operating system from backing storage. By having this bootstrap loader ROM chip, computers can reliably find any operating system, while still allowing users to modify and upgrade the OS easily.
