From Higher Computing Science
- Many file formats will use compression to makes files smaller. This means they take less storage space, and can be downloaded faster over a network.
- Compression will reduce the size of a file, but sometimes will also reduce the quality. Lossless compression maintains the quality of a file, and lossy compression does not. Lossy compression, by reducing the quality of a file, can often be much smaller than a a file compressed with lossless compression.
